When I asked my Food Freedom group what their biggest weekend challenge was, Rachel replied: “I enjoy having no routine on the weekends, but I don’t like how all over the place I feel with food when I don’t have structure.”

So many women swing between two extremes on weekends: Being “good” and sticking rigidly to a food plan, or feeling completely out of control with food choices, overeating, and guilt.

But, there is a middle ground.

You can have both flexibility and stability with food on the weekends.

You don’t have to abandon all sense of structure to have fun or experience pleasure. After all, it’s not enjoyable to feel either stuffed or starving. Sometimes the most supportive thing you can do is keep a few simple anchors in place - even on weekends.

One helpful anchor is eating breakfast before 8:30am. This can help stabilise blood sugar and create a sense of steadiness for the rest of the day. Then take a moment to think through what the day might look like and where lunch and supper could fit into your plans.

Eating three satisfying meals on the weekend isn’t about following strict rules. It’s about creating more pleasure and ease, because nourishment helps us feel physically and mentally steady.

When you go long stretches without eating, it’s much easier to end up:

* Too hungry, which can lead to overeating

* Grazing all day without feeling satisfied

* Disconnected from your hunger and fullness cues

* Anxious about food choices

Allow for more variety and spontaneity in your meals on weekends, but make it a conscious choice rather than “falling off” a strict weekday diet.

This weekend, choose one simple food anchor, like eating breakfast before 8:30 am, and remind yourself that structure with food is not a restriction; it creates more pleasure.
